Fix-It Tickets in Texas: How Compliance Dismissals Work for Registration, License, Insurance, and Equipment

Some Texas tickets can be dismissed simply by fixing the problem and proving it to the court in time. This guide explains which charges qualify, the statutory deadlines and fee limits, and how El Paso Municipal Court handles proof of compliance.

01

What is a “fix-it ticket” in Texas?

“Fix-it ticket” is an informal name for a citation that a statute allows the court to dismiss once the driver corrects the problem. Texas has no single fix-it law. Instead, separate sections of the Transportation Code list specific charges, the deadline to fix them, the proof required, and the most the court may charge as a reimbursement fee when it dismisses the case.

Two details matter in every one of these provisions. First, many of them say the judge “may” dismiss, while a few say the court “shall” dismiss, so the wording affects how much discretion the court has. Second, “working day” in the registration and inspection sections excludes Saturdays, Sundays, and legal holidays, so count carefully before assuming you still have time.

02

Expired registration, missing sticker, or plate problems

Under Transportation Code §502.407, driving with an expired registration becomes an offense only after the fifth working day past the expiration date. A judge may dismiss the charge if you renew no later than the 20th working day after the offense or before your first court appearance date, whichever is later, and show that the registration fee was paid. The court may assess a reimbursement fee of up to $20 when it dismisses.

Related charges have tighter windows. Not displaying a valid registration sticker (§502.473), not displaying two assigned plates (§504.943), or displaying a plate for the wrong period or one that is obscured (§504.945) may be dismissed for a fee of up to $10, generally if you remedy the defect before your first court appearance. In El Paso County, remember that registration still requires a passing emissions inspection, even though safety inspections for most non-commercial vehicles ended January 1, 2025.

Expired driver’s license and failure to display a license

Transportation Code §521.026 lets a judge dismiss a charge of driving with an expired license if you renew it within 20 working days or before your first court appearance date, whichever is later. The judge may assess a reimbursement fee of up to $20 on dismissal. Bring the renewed license itself, or the official renewal receipt, to the court. Renewing can be quick, but leave time for the receipt or new card to arrive before your setting.

Failure to display a license is different. Section 521.025(d) makes it a defense if you produce in court a driver’s license issued to you, appropriate for the vehicle you were driving, and valid at the time of the stop. When the charge is dismissed on that defense, §521.025(f) allows an administrative fee of up to $10. This defense does not help if the license was suspended or never issued; those are separate offenses.

04

No-insurance tickets: the valid-policy defense

Under Transportation Code §601.193, it is a defense to a no-insurance charge if you produce one of the documents listed in §601.053(a) that was valid when the offense allegedly occurred. After the court verifies the document, the statute says the court shall dismiss the charge. Acceptable proof includes the policy, a standard insurance card, an insurer-provided image on your phone, or a binder confirming coverage.

Timing is everything here. A policy purchased after the stop does not satisfy §601.193, because the defense depends on coverage in effect on the citation date. If you did have coverage but could not show it, ask your insurer for a letter or declarations page showing the effective dates and the covered vehicle. If you had no coverage that day, this is not a compliance dismissal, and other options should be reviewed before you plead.

05

Defective equipment and inspection-related tickets

Transportation Code §547.004 covers vehicles that are unsafe or not equipped as Chapter 547 requires, such as lighting problems. A court may dismiss the charge if you remedy the defect before your first court appearance and pay a reimbursement fee of up to $10. The dismissal is not available for an offense involving a commercial motor vehicle. A repair invoice, a dated photo, or both can help show the fix.

Inspection tickets are now narrower. Section 548.605 applies when a vehicle was registered under an out-of-state certification and is then operated in Texas without meeting inspection requirements. The court shall dismiss if you comply within 20 working days of the citation or before your first appearance date, whichever is later, and within 40 working days after the inspection deadline, with a fee of up to $20.

How do I show proof of compliance in El Paso Municipal Court?

El Paso Municipal Court’s arraignment page says defendants may present affirmative defenses at arraignment for failure to maintain financial responsibility, driver’s license violations, vehicle registration violations, inspection sticker violations, and defective equipment violations. You present documents proving compliance, and after reviewing them the City Prosecutor makes a recommendation to the judge about how the case should be resolved. Arraignment is for pleas and proof, not testimony about the stop.

Arraignment can happen in person or through the City’s video arraignment locations, where a document camera lets the judge view your paperwork. Bring originals and copies, and act by the appearance date printed on your citation. The City warns that if you have not pleaded on every charge by that date, an arrest warrant and a $50 warrant fee can follow. Justice of the Peace courts apply the same statutes but set their own procedures.

  • Renewed registration receipt or current sticker, with proof the fee was paid
  • Renewed driver’s license or official renewal receipt
  • Insurance card, policy, or insurer letter showing coverage on the citation date
  • Repair invoice or dated photos for equipment defects

What is not a compliance dismissal—and when to get help

Moving violations such as speeding, running a red light, or unsafe lane changes cannot be fixed after the fact; those cases turn on defensive driving, deferred disposition, negotiation, or trial. Driving while license invalid, driving with no license ever issued, a fictitious plate or sticker, and a no-insurance charge without valid coverage on the date of the stop also fall outside these statutes. Missing the deadline usually means losing the dismissal, not just paying more.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can an expired registration ticket be dismissed in Texas?+

Often, yes. Under §502.407, a judge may dismiss it if you renew within 20 working days after the offense or before your first court appearance date, whichever is later, and show the fee was paid. The court may charge a reimbursement fee of up to $20.

Will my expired license ticket be dismissed if I renew it?+

It can be. Section 521.026 lets a judge dismiss the charge if you renew within 20 working days or before your first court appearance date, whichever is later, with a reimbursement fee of up to $20. Dismissal is discretionary, so bring clear proof of the renewal.

Can I get a no-insurance ticket dismissed by buying insurance now?+

No. Section 601.193 requires proof of a policy that was valid when the offense allegedly occurred. A new policy bought after the stop does not qualify. If you had coverage but could not show it, bring proof of the effective dates, and the court shall dismiss after verifying it.

How much does a compliance dismissal cost in Texas?+

Statutes cap the reimbursement fee: up to $20 for expired registration, expired license, and §548.605 inspection charges, and up to $10 for defective equipment, missing plates or stickers, and failure to display a license. You still pay the cost of renewing or repairing.

Do I have to go to court for a fix-it ticket in El Paso?+

You must respond by the appearance date. El Paso Municipal Court reviews proof of compliance at arraignment, in person or by video arraignment, and the City Prosecutor makes a recommendation to the judge. A lawyer can also appear for you on a written promise to appear.
